Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic has revealed today that he is expecting to make a return from injury for the clubs pre-season training programme. The 30 year old Serbia international ruptured a cruciate ligament during United’s Champions League defeat to … Continue reading →

Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic has revealed today that he is expecting to make a return from injury for the clubs pre-season training programme. The 30 year old Serbia international ruptured a cruciate ligament during United’s Champions League defeat to FC Basel in December and has been limited to gym work since undergoing an operation prior to Christmas. Speaking about his possible return the United captain said: ‘My recovery is going well. The projection was I would be ready for next season. I am on schedule and will hopefully start training in July.’ Since being sidelined last year Vidic has watched his team-mates close the gap on rivals and title challengers Manchester City. They now sit on top of the Premier League table and only have to play one of the top seven teams before the end of the season; that being the derby against Man City. Vidic also spoke about his belief that United can claim their 20th league title this seasons and said: ‘I’ve had the belief from the beginning. And, if you look at the schedule of the games we have left to play, I would like to say we are the favourites. We still have to win the nine games and need to be focused. We believed from the beginning and have the confidence but we have nine Champions League finals now I would say. It’s all in our hands. We have to focus and give our best. All the players are ready to perform which is a good sign and a positive thing for the nine games ahead.’

So, do you think Vidic will make a return for pre-season? Is it important that he does so in terms of next season?

Will United win the Premier League this season? Does Alex Ferguson need to improve the squad before next season? And who would be the top target?

We would love to hear from you.

Last night Manchester United suffered their first back to back defeat in Europe since 1996 as they lost 3-2 to La Liga side Athletic Bilbao. Their home form at Old Trafford in Europe this season has been indifferent at best with draws against FC Basel and Benfica along with a solitary victory over Romanian minnows Otelul Galati and defeats to Ajax and, of course, Bilbao. Their early exit from the Champions League this season alongside neighbours and Premier League challengers Manchester City has left United seeking solace in the chance of winning the Europa League. The only previous teams to have won all three major European competitions are Juventus, Ajax and Bayern Munich. Following last nights defeat however Alex Ferguson’s men face an uphill struggle to try and secure their spot in the last eight by trying to turn their aggregate scoreline around at Bilbao’s San Mames stadium. United struck first in the match with Wayne Rooney tucking away a parried shot from Javier Hernandez however Bilbao’s star striker, and much sought after talent, Fernando Llorente levelled before half-time with a header. The second half could easily have seen the Basque side run away with the match were it not for their fellow countryman David De Gea in the United goal making a string of important saves. Despite his efforts though further goals from De Marcos and Munain saw the match look set for a 3-1 finish before Rooney struck again from the penalty spot seconds before the final whistle. This important goal appears to have just about kept United in the tie but they will face another energetic and stern test at Bilbao’s home. The 6,500 Bilbao fans inside Old Trafford were treated to an end-to-end match and watched their young side play an aggressive game against the English champions. Even prior to last nights match Bilbao’s reputation was on the up with their extremely young and free scoring side currently sitting 5th in La Liga. The average age of last nights team was less than 24 and their domestic goal scoring has only been bettered so far this season by Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona. Their recent run of impressive form appears also to be down to their new manager, and former Chile and Argentina boss Marcelo Bielsa who took over in the Summer. His team play an aggressive game with a high line and quick pressing of the ball characterised by their energetic, youthful exuberance. Speaking after the match United manager Sir Alex Ferguson described his sides attitude as “slack” and admitted that his side face a tough test in trying to overcome Bilbao’s three away goals. He said: ‘There has been that slackness all season. We have had a bad year in Europe. We conceded three against Basel, two against Benfica, another three against Bilbao and two to Ajax. That tells its own story. Maybe it is just one of those years where we are having to restock and assess how we should approach games at home.’ Despite admitting that his side were outplayed last night Ferguson remains confident that his team are capable of progressing in the competition. He said: ‘They were the better team. It’s an uphill fight for us. The question is, can we win the match over there? I think we can.’ His final comments were regarding a couple of decisions made by the German referee Florian Meyer. Ferguson complained that Bilbao’s second goal should have been ruled out for offside and also that a free kick should not have been given in the build up to the third goal for Patrice Evra kicking the ball without a boot on. He said: ‘The referee said to the players that you can’t play without a boot. The real rule is you can but when the play is stopped you have to go off the field. It seems a bit bizarre as he only passed it about three feet. It was a bit unfortunate.’

So, what did you make of United’s, and indeed Bilbao’s, performance last night? Can United overturn the one goal deficit in Spain? Can they hope to win the Europa League?

We would love to hear from you.

It has been revealed today that Arsenal have agreed a fee with German Bundesliga side Cologne for striker Lukas Podolski. The pre-agreement is thought to be in the region of £10.9m on a four-year contract beginning in the Summer and will see the Germany international paid around £100,000 a week. The 26 year old, who was born in Poland, will have to pass a medical and agree personal terms before making the move in the Summer and is looking likely to join up with the Gunners after Germany’s Euro 2012 campaign. Despite being only 26 Podolski has already appeared for his national side 96 times and also spent three seasons at Bayern Munich before returning to his forst club Cologne in 2009. He has played for Germany in the 2004 and ’08 European Championships as well as the 2006 and ’10 World Cup. He also scored three times to help his side qualify for this years competition and so far this season has netted 16 times in 22 matches for Cologne. Despite recent rumours that mega-rich Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala were interested in signing Podolski, Cologne manager Stale Solbakken admitted that Arsenal was his most likely destination and that talks were at an advanced stage. Podolski also echoed this sentiment and stated that he would not move for financial reasons alone. He said: ‘Money is not the most important thing for me. What is crucial is the development of my game.’ The only other comments on the deal were made by Podolski’s German team-mate and current Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker who said: ‘He has sent me a number of text messages and I have told him this is a great place to work and Arsenal are an amazing club.’ More transfer rumours regarding Arsenal have also surfaced today with Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini declaring interest in the Gunners star striker Robin Van Persie. The Holland international has scored an incredibe 32 goals so far this season and has hit top form since taking the Arsenal captaincy over from Cesc Fabregas who left for his boyhood club Barcelona last Summer. In recent transfer windows the Man City boss has paoched several players from Arsene Wenger’s side including Gael Clichy, Samir Nasri, Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor. Speaking about his interest in Van Persie though the Italian said he believed that the 28 year old would remain with Arsenal despite his contract being up in 2013. He said: ‘We are interested in good players, I think all the good teams are interested in Van Persie. He is a fantastic striker but I think he will remain with Arsenal.’ He went on to speak further about the possibility of the deal and said: ‘I think if there is a good player who wants to leave a club, then we are interested. I think Van Persie at this moment is one of the best strikers in Europe with Messi, Ronaldo, Aguero and Balotelli. But if this player wants to stay, we don’t have any problem. In my opinion, Van Persie will stay at Arsenal.’

So, will Podolski complete his move to Arsenal? Is it a good move from Wenger to push the deal through early? Does the signing of a striker signal the end of Van Persie’s time at Arsenal?

Will Van Persie leave Arsenal for Man City in the Summer or is he more likely to move to one of the big Spanish clubs?

We would love to hear from you.

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres has today learned that he has been dropped from Vicente Del Bosque’s Spain squad for their friendly against Venezuela on Wednesday night. The 27 year old has not been left out of the national squad in the past five years and was often a certain first choice, particularly when his form was outstanding at Liverpool. Speaking about the decision Del Bosque was quick to make the point that this does not mean that he will not have a place at the European Championships in Poland and Ukraine this Summer. He said: ‘Torres is not in good form and we believed in this case it was better if he didn’t come. He is a lad we appreciate a lot and it pains me to leave him out but I wanted to be fair. But this doesn’t mean anything. This is not a definitive list for Euro 2012.’ Meanwhile at Chelsea, manager Andre Villas-Boas has blamed himself for the teams poor run of form following their latest slip-up, a 3-1 defeat away at Napoli in the Champions League. Speaking in an interview after the match Villas-Boas said: ‘Players don’t have to take responsibility – and they shouldn’t have to take it. They are top players and they know what they can do. But there is only one person responsible – which is me.’ Controversially AVB left Frank Lampard, Ashely Cole and Michael Essien out of the starting 11 for Tuesday’s match and rumours have begun to circulate that tensions in the dressing room are at an all time high. Villas-Boas spoke about the situation and said: ‘The club is more important than any individual. Full backing or part backing or whatever backing doesn’t really matter.Roman Abramovic is disappointed with the result and asking questions about how we set up the team, which were duly explained. There is still 90 minutes to play and we strongly believe we can turn the tie around. I don’t have any regrets regarding team selection.’

So, do you agree with Del Bosque’s decision to leave Torres out of the Spain squad? Will he ever regain the form he showed at Liverpool?

Been the longest and hardest 18 months of my life and feel truly honoured to be given a chance.’ Caretaker manager Pearce also spoke about his decision and praised Campbell, he said: ‘I’ve looked at games in isolation and tried to assess what I would want and what I would like to see. I know Fraizer quite well because I’ve taken the majority of these boys to under-21 tournaments. He was fantastic at under-21 level. He has come back into the Sunderland side and that’s given him a lift. I think he’s worked well to get back from the injury he had. He’s an exciting talent.’ Also earning a call-up is Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley who is yet to appear for the senior squad having been previously called up to the friendly against Holland which was cancelled last year. Pearce also praised Cleverley following his performance in the Europa League against Ajax having returned from an ankle injury. He said: ‘He started the season fantastically well. It’s been a bit stop-start with injuries. He’s come back into the United side, they’ve played him in a more central role, which is something I didn’t do at under-21 level, and he’s flourished. United talk highly of him. He’s got a big future. Just being around the senior set-up will stand him in good stead.’ Other notable call-ups include Manchester City defender Micah Richards whose recent form has seen him earn a place in the squad for the first time in a while along with Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard who has also recently returned from injury and Chelsea star Daniel Sturridge. Not making the cut were veterans Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard and somewhat surprisingly, in-form youngster Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal. Stuart Pearce did explain his decision though and said: ‘He’s played only a handful of games. Alex is playing extremely well for the under-21s and if we elevated him into the senior squad and he played for 10 minutes then I can’t see what the footballing education would be. My mentality going into the game was ‘what would I need to learn as a manager going into a major tournament this summer and what would the possible next manager looking from afar need to learn about individuals?’

So, what do you make of the 25 man squad that Pearce has chosen? Will we beathy Holland on Wednesday?

Can we realistically hope to win the European Championships in the Summer? Will Stuart Pearce go to the competition as manager or will it be someone else? If so, who will take over?

We would love to hear from you.

I cannot keep saying them.’ Since joining Chelsea in the Summer Villas-Boas has spent around £84m on new players all but two of which are under the age of 24 showing that his ‘restructing’ of the squad definitely has a long-term feel about it. The only exceptions were Raul Meireles, 28, who signed from Liverpool and Gary Cahill, 26, who joined from Bolton Wanderers. Despite a poor recent run of form which has seen Chelsea drop 10 points behind Tottenham Hotspur who are in 3rd Villas-Boas remained upbeat about the quality of the squad and wanted to issue another reminder that his’project’ was in its infancy. He said: ‘In terms of the results this year, the speculation is normal given the cultural past of this football club. But you have to understand that there’s a different perspective now. We had a three-year project to change not only the team, but the culture and structure of the club. There’s a lot we needed to do, a lot of plans. That’s why I’m excited about the future. Having said that, we have to build a team to win trophies.’ He then added a little spice to the upcoming Champions League clash by saying that he was still confident that Chelsea could go on and win the competition. He said: ‘We’re no longer in the Carling Cup and don’t have a chance to win the title. But we are still confident we can do well in the Champions League and the FA Cup.’ Chelsea’s top scorers, former Manchester City striker Daniel Sturridge, and Ivory Coast star Didier Drogba have also spoken about tonights match and have made out that the club have a point to prove given their recent results. Sturridge said: ‘They have some great individuals, as well as a good team. But we have the same and we are not going to worry about what they have got. We have to go out there with the attitude that they have got to worry about what we have got.’ Drogba added: ‘We feel that no one really believes in us. We are going to show we deserve to be here. It’s a top game and we are going to have to get a good result.’

So, do you think AVB will get his wish and be backed publicly by Abramovic? Will he still be in the Chelsea job next season or will he be sacked if they don’t secure a Champions League place?

Can Chelsea beat Napoli? Do they stand a chance of winning the Champions League this season?

We would love to hear from you.

It has been revealed today that Niall Quinn has stepped down from his role as director of international development at Sunderland after spending the last six years at the club. He joined as chairman in 2006 when the consortium he headed, Drumaville, took over the club and remained in the post until October last year. It is now thought that Quinn will return to his native Ireland to concentrate on spending time with his family and his other business interests outside of football. Speaking about his decision Quinn said: ‘I’ve had the most amazing six years. It gives me a huge sense of pride to see where the club is today.’ As chairman Quinn, and the Drumaville consortium, were responsible for backing Sunderland’s return to the Premier League and he was also heavily involved in persuading the current owner, American Ellis Short, to buy the club in 2009. The former Arsenal and Manchester City player stepped aside last year to allow Short into the chairman role and became more involved with the clubs overseas business deals. Quinn, who amassed an oustanding 92 caps for Ireland, leaves the club in 9th place in the Premier League and also through to the quarter finals of the FA Cup. Since sacking Steve Bruce as manager and appointing former Aston Villa boss Martin O’Neill the team have won 10 out of their 15 matches are look set for a strong finish to the season. Speaking about the clubs current situation Quinn said: ‘Everything is in place for Sunderland to really make a statement, which was always my aim. From a football perspective, securing the services of Martin O’Neill has been an absolute highlight. In Martin we have a man that understands the region, the club and the unique place it holds in the lives of its supporters and I am confident that he will harness the immense passion that exists here and take us to new heights.’ He also paid tribute to the Sunderlands as well as owner Ellis Short who he described as an ‘astute’ and ‘passionate’ professional. The owner and chairman responded to Quinn’s decision and spoke highly of the former Sunderland striker. He said: ‘Niall Quinn is and always will be a Sunderland legend. His vision brought me into the club and that vision still inspires what we do. He has been a trusted friend and advisor to me throughout our time together at Sunderland and while I’m sad about his departure, I respect his view that his ‘work is done’. My job is to carry on that work.’ Manager Martin O’Neill also spoke about Quinn describing him as an ‘iconic’ figure at the club. He added: ‘Like everyone, I couldn’t be more disappointed that he has decided to step down but of course I respect and understand his decision. He has been the heartbeat of the football club for so long and his legacy is immeasurable. To me he is ‘Mr. Sunderland’ – and always will be.’

So, what do you think will Quinn’s everlasting legacy be at Sunderland. His goalscoring as a player or his work as chairman?

Where will Sunderland finish in the league this season? Can they win the FA Cup?

Both Manchester United and Manchester City are set to make their first appearances in this season’s Europa League having both been dumped out of the Champions League towards the end of last year. Man Utd play their first leg away at fellow Champions League exitee’s Ajax. It has been reported that Sir Alex Ferguson will not field a full first choice 11 for tonights fixture and it is thought that Patrice Evra, Ryan Giggs and Dimitar Berbatov will all be rested. The 20 man squad does contain Nani, Cleverley, Young and Jones however with all four players returning from injury. Youngsters Paul Pogba and Zeki Fryers have also made the cut and will travel to Holland today. Despite their illustrious opponents this is the first season that Man Utd have competed outside the Champions League since 1995, a fact that did not escape the notice of United striker Javier Hernandez. Speaking about the tie he said: ‘Both teams have come out of the Champions League and they both have a great history. We have won a lot of European Cups between us, so it will be a very interesting game. We need to get used to the fact we are not in the Champions League this season.’ Manager Alex Ferguson also spoke about the game and reiterated that he will take the Europa League seriously and attempt to win the competition. He said: ‘Winning any European trophy is significant. Irrespective of those who have won the three trophies before it is important for us, with our own history, to win tournaments all the time. We threw it away in our home game against FC Basel and were unlucky against Benfica. That caught us short and we suffered for it. Now players are coming back I am sure we can combine the Premier League and Europa League so I would certainly try to play my strongest team in each round now.’ Premier League leaders Man City are also in Europa League action tonight against another of the Champions League drop-outs Porto. Manager Roberto Mancini is believed to be taking a strong squad to Portugal for the clash and welcomes back brothers Kolo and Yaya Toure from African Nations duty with the Ivory Coast. It is also thought that controversial Italy striker Mario Balotelli is included in the travelling party having served a domestic suspension and also joins January loanee from AS Roma, David Pizarro, in the 20 man squad. One man who has not made the cut is the recently returned Carlos Tevez who has spent the last couple of months in his homeland Argentina having been suspended by the club for gross misconduct. In a brief interview about the match Mancini said: ‘I think this is one of the big games at this stage because we play Porto, a top team who have played in the Champions League. I have met Porto many times in the Europa League or Champions League and it is very difficult to play here. At home they are very strong, last year they won the title. It will be very hard for this reason but I think it will be a very good game.’

So, how do you think City and United will fair in tonight’s away fixtures? Can either of the clubs win the cometition, and who is the most likely to do so?

Sought after Lille midfielder Eden Hazard has revealed on Belgian television that Tottenham Hotspur may be his preferred destination when the Summer transfer window opens. The 21 year old Belgium international has made 121 appearances for Lille already in his short career and has scored 25 times. He made his club debut at 16 years old and his international debut at 17. Hazard also became the French Ligue 1′s youngest ‘player of the year’ when he was given the award last season aged 20. Not only that but his performances also helped Lille on to a domestic league and cup double. His contract with the French club runs until June 2015 but it is widely believed that this will be broken in the Summer when it is likely that he will move on. Over the last few months it has been widely reported that Hazard is one of the most sought after players in Europe with both Arsenal and Real Madrid being top of the list to land the youngsters signature. It is believed that Arsenal in fact lodged a bid in the region of £26m for Hazard in the Summer following the departures of Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona and Samir Nasri to Manchester City but a deal failed to materialise. During an interview with Belgian tv station RTBF, Hazard said: ‘Maybe it will be Tottenham. It is a great English club. I said that I would go to England and there are very good players at Spurs. I have not yet signed, this is going to happen soon.’ Despite always being linked with a move to the Premier League, and expressing his desire to do so, Hazard didn’t rule out a move to Spain. He said: ‘Spain is perhaps more my style of game but if I move there it must be to either Barcelona or Real Madrid.’ Hazard’s team-mate, and former Chelsea and Liverpool midfielder, Joe Cole has also heaped praise on the youngster recently describing him as an extraordinary player and even comparing him to Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi. Speaking to talkSport Cole said: ‘Hazard is different class. He’s still only 21 sic and has definitely got another few gears to go up. He’s got the same attitude as Rooney at that age. He’s fearless.’ He then followed: ‘He knows how good he is, and that’s a positive thing. All the top players have got that belief and a bit of presence and arrogance, and he’s like that. He’s a bit like Messi. There’s only one Messi and I don’t want to put pressure on the kid, but he’s like him – short, squat, powerful legs, great touch, he can finish, he’s got everything.’

So, where will Hazard end up in the Summer? Could he be as good as Messi? If so, what could the transfer fee realistically be?

We would love to hear from you.

Paris Saint Germain manager Carlo Ancelotti has today explained the reasons behind his clubs failed January bid for wantaway Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez. The 52 year old Italian also said that he would still like to sign Tevez but the Argentine’s wage demands remain a stumbling block in negotiations between the two clubs. The former Chelsea boss said: ‘We spoke with his agent – we wanted to have him – but we couldn’t reach an agreement. I don’t think he’ll change his idea about how much he wants to earn.’ It was believed for some time that the 27 year old Argentina international would leave City in the January transfer window but despite reported interest from AC Milan, PSG and Inter Milan he remained at the Etihad Stadium and has even been selected in Roberto Mancini’s 25 man squad for the rest of the season. This decision has of course prompted reports that Mancini may play Tevez before the end of the season despite previously stating that he was “finished” at the club and would never play for them again. The long running saga began back in September when Tevez reportedly refused to come on as a substitute against Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Tevez has vehemently denied these claims and has stated all along that there was simply a misunderstanding between himself and the manager and believed that he was conversing about a warm-up routine rather than a substitution. Immediately after the incident Tevez was fined two weeks wages by the club, an estimated £400,000. Following this he left England and returned to South America prompting the club to fine him a total of six weeks wages for gross misconduct. At a reported £200,000 a week this is estimated to have cost the player £1.2m in total. It has also been mentioned in the media that Tevez has not been paid his wage since the end of November, another massive figure totalling £1.7m. Not only that but shortly before the Bayern Munich incident it was also reported that Man City had rescinded Tevez’ loyalty bonuses for the remainder of his contract due to his persistent transfer requests. This was reported at a simply staggering £6m meaning that the potential loss of money to the player since September 2011 to today could be as much as £9.3m. Speaking to the media about the transfer situation Man City chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak spoke highly of Ancelotti’s PSG and Claudio Ranieri’s Inter Milan but criticised Italian champions AC Milan for their lack of professionalism. Despite AC Milan being Tevez’ preferred destination it appears more likely that the club would rather send him elsewhere following the previous discussions. He described their dealings with Tevez as “premature” and said: ‘As things stand, AC Milan are not an option for Carlos. If they want to be a consideration in this transfer window, they would do better to stop congratulating one another and begin to look at how they would meet our terms.’ It is believed that Al-Mubarak would only be willing to let Tevez go for £25m plus add-ons. He then went on to say: ‘Unless we receive an offer we deem appropriate, the terms of his contract will be enforced. Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain approached discussions with us in good faith. It is always a positive experience to deal with people with a professional approach.’ Tevez, whose current deal at City expires in June 2014, is still in his home country and has not played for the team since the 21st September. He is understood to have attended a farewell match at the La Bombonera stadium in Buenos Aires recently for former Boca Juniors striker Martin Palermo.

So, where do you think Tevez will move to in the Summer transfer window? Will he cause any trouble at his next club?

Do you think Tevez will play again for Man City before the end of the season? Should City be willing to accept a lower offer for Tevez just to get rid of him?

We would love to hear from you.
